Taubman College has an exciting opportunity for an Academic Advisor to join the student affairs team. The Academic Advisor advises, guides and supports undergraduate and graduate students and leads the student affairs peer mentoring program. They will utilize holistic and proactive academic advising strategies towards goals of student retention, persistence, accomplishment, and success. The ideal candidate is student-centric with a strong commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion and a proven ability to serve diverse populations. They are creative and solution-oriented with excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
Provide academic advising for new and continuing undergraduate and graduate students on course selection, programs of study, and degree progression
Review, maintain, and update students’ academic records for progress towards degree completion
Interpret college and university policies and procedures in response to queries
Continuously review and update advising guidelines, procedures, and processes for improving efficiencies. Develop advising analysis and reports
Manage the academic wellness referral process to provide support and resources to students in moments of concern
Compile, communicate, and promote external scholarships, fellowships and award opportunities to students, provide administrative support for resulting applications
Assist in the planning of and participate in all orientations for new students, provide support to student organizations, and organize other student activities, as assigned
Represent Student Affairs, specifically advising, at prospective student and family events such as Preview Weekends, Parent and Family Weekend
Implement Taubman College’s peer mentoring program
2 years of progressively responsible experience in counseling, academic advising, and/or higher education
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google software
Additionally, successful candidates will be able to demonstrate through their interviews and our reference checking that they have:
Ability to establish and maintain professional, effective and collegial working relationships with students, faculty, staff and university personnel
Demonstrated ability to effectively manage multiple projects and priorities, establish goals, and produce timely desired results
Superior written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills, group presentation skills
Proven ability to work with diverse constituencies
Masters in higher education administration, counselling and/or equivalent
