Retention Specialist , Undergraduate Programs - John Chambers College of Business & Economics 17072
Undergraduate Programs at the John Chambers College of Business and Economics (B&E) is seeking applications for a Retention Specialist. This position will coordinate and implement a comprehensive set of support services designed to ensure the success of undergraduate business students as measured by increases in retention and graduation rates. The incumbent will also conduct programmatic and individual activities while functioning as part of the college's recruitment and retention team.
In order to be successful in this position, the ideal candidate will:
Assist the Director with the planning and implementation of measurable and actionable retention strategies for key student cohorts
Support academically at-risk students
Work in a team environment with the student support staff to promote student success through improved processes, programmatic offerings and outreach campaigns
Handle confidential student information with tact, discretion and in compliance with FERPA regulations.
Facilitate the development and implementation of new retention initiatives by researching literature on student retention, attending workshops, conferences, and seminars specifically addressing student advisement and retention. Make recommendations to assist students toward degree completion.
Support contractually readmitted students and students on academic probation through success coaching, seminars, and other relevant approaches
Coordinate and lead Mid-Year Academy
Review student records for retention issues; follow up on progress through personal contact and correspondence.
Coach students through administrative barriers that prevent them from progressing towards their degree.
Teach 1-2 sections of BCOR 191 per semester
Work with college data analysts and Director to create and maintain meaningful reports on student engagement and retention
Track activities across the campus related to the overall retention strategies and inform campus leadership regarding needed changes to mitigate any retention declines. Coordinate with various stakeholders throughout the college to provide a comprehensive view of student engagement activities.
Assist Director in the evaluation of applicants and award selections of College-specific scholarships
Assist as needed with department events and activities such as Academic Day, Living Learning Community activities and Adventure First Year Trips
Master's degree in education, business, administration, counseling or a related field preferred.
Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of related professional work experience will be considered
Two (2) years' experience in higher education, in a student-focused role, preferred
Knowledge of student development theories and how to apply them in an academic environment
Excellent commitment to customer service
Superior time management skills to effectively oversee multiple ongoing projects
The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds is required.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills (written, oral and presentation)
Strong interpersonal skills, including conflict management
Demonstrated understanding of the undergraduate curricular and co-curricular experience at WVU or another major public institution of HIED
Ability to work collegially with members of the WVU community across multiple departments and at various levels
Computer literacy - ability to use software/ student data systems (Navigate, TargetX, DegreeWorks) and Microsoft Office Suite
