The Associate Director (AD) of Residence Education, a unit within Michigan Housing, will share in the leadership and management of residence halls and apartments housing up to 12,000 students and some families. The AD will provide direction and expertise to the development and delivery of a range of programs and services designed to enhance the multicultural, educational, and social experiences of Michigan Housing students embracing Residence Education’s Community Development Model (CDM) and Engagement Models. The AD will promote and facilitate student learning, academic success, and co-curricular participation; foster an atmosphere of respect for individual differences and community values; guide departmental planning, program development and coordination of departmental efforts; provide direct contact with students and their families in the context of critical incidents; and develop and evaluate strategies for the management of critical incidents in the areas of resident safety, diversity and inclusion, mental and physical and emotional health. Budget consultation and stewardship of resources within a total budget of $3 million.
35% Supervision and personnel management
Share in the direct supervision, selection, coaching, and evaluation 3 Assistant Directors/Area Coordinators. Serve as functional supervisor of Assistant Directors in Residence Education, as well as professional and administrative staff. Determines competency development for staff at all levels and guides the learning process, including coaching and feedback, performance management, professional development, and work planning. Oversees all full-time leadership team staff training and onboarding to assure alignment with Student Life values.
30% Departmental Leadership
As a leader of Residence Education, the AD provides direction in strategic planning efforts, vision and long-term planning, supervision and empowerment of staff, and administrative and fiscal responsibility. The AD will have experience, skills, and abilities pertaining to student development, identity development, intercultural, social justice education, and group facilitation. Leads the implementation and support for Housing-wide initiatives. The AD serves collaboratively in the Director’s absence. Represents the department on committees both campus-wide and within Student Life. Provides mentorship and consultation to students and professional staff based on professional standards and best practices and trends. Directs, advises, and provides crisis response for Michigan Housing and serves in an on-call rotation. Leads and supports organizational development and change management initiatives. Serves as a central point of contact for strategic planning, annual procedures, and capital planning.
25% Educational, Community and Student Development Responsibilities
Provide leadership in the delivery of the residential learning outcomes that enhances students’ experiences in the areas of leadership and engagement, social justice and inclusion, interpersonal skills, and integrative learning. Collaborates with Student Life Colleagues to ensure the curricular and co-curricular learning is optimized. Ensures an innovative community development program for residence halls and apartments while leading a dynamic team of full-time professional and student staff to develop and deliver a wide range of programs and services designed to enhance the multicultural, educational, and social experiences of students living in University Housing. Coordinates processes for seamless support across Residence Education priorities, connecting selection, training, leadership development, diversity and inclusion initiatives. Supports the Michigan Learning Communities and theme housing programs. Serve as a small group facilitator for the ALA 421 ResStaff pre-employment course. Oversees and ensures reporting of budgetary allocations and expenses.
10% Administrative Responsibilities
Assist the Director with overall program administration; effectively communicate with internal and external constituencies. Budget consultation and stewardship of resources within a total budget of $3 million. Review and revise University Housing policies and protocol for the department, including payroll, and personnel matters. Serve as liaison to University Housing and Student Life Colleagues in the delivery of the residential experience.
A Master’s degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Educational Administration, or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum of six (6) years of full-time, progressively responsible professional experience in a college or university housing and residential life setting or similarly applicable experience.
Demonstrated skill in developing and sustaining collaborative and culturally inclusive relationships. Considerable leadership experience with supervision, student conduct, crisis response, and ability to develop and implement an organizational vision, strategy and goals.
The ability to communicate and relate effectively with diverse students, families, staff, and faculty.
Level and extent of staff development and training experience.
Level, extent and relevance of Student Affairs and Housing professional experience, including 6 yrs. of progressive leadership responsibilities in a complex organization
Level and extent of social justice advocacy, education, and awareness in interactions with students, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds
Level and extent of supervisory experience.
Demonstrated leadership in living-learning and theme house program development and implementation.
Quality of interpersonal communication skills with diverse populations of students, staff, faculty and community leaders.
Some evenings and weekends are required.
May need to move packages of up to fifty pounds to and from various areas in the community, including shelving units, package storage locations, and mailrooms. The incumbent is required to frequently travel around campus to engage with campus partners and students.
