About the Opportunity: Working within the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid, this position works with current and prospective students in all programs offered by the Law School, including but not limited to JD, LLM, MLS,FlexJD and Dual Degree programs. The Assistant Director will advise and counsel prospective and current law school students on the availability of financial aid, the delivery process for receiving it, and the reconciliation processes required to ensure that financial aid funds are transferred to the student's account. They will review student applications, perform verification procedures, review/evaluate appeals, and intercede for students with participating departments at the Law School and on campus (Student Financial Services, Deans Office, Academic Student Affairs, and Coop and Career Development.) Provide financial aid information to students, follow up as necessary and resolve customer problems. Exceed customer expectations, be professional, flexible, highly trained and empowered to make decisions to provide financial aid information and expedite problem resolution. Advise students and families regarding loan programs, financial aid processes and deadlines, billing information, etc. Follow-up on internal and external requests for information. Resolve financial aid documentation issues and recommend appropriate action for most effective aid programs. Provide tuition adjustment policy and resolution. Manages the Law School's Loan Deferral and Forgiveness Program. Supply application, award information and deadlines to LDF applicants. Maintain a level of exemplary customer service, through foresight, follow through and interpersonal skills. Provide supervision and training to work-study students, ensure appropriate office coverage and provide administrative support services to the Director of Financial Aid at the School of Law and the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. Represent the Office at outreach events.
Responsibilities: Administration of Federal and Institutional aid. Administer federal and Northeastern-based financial assistance. Review student applications. Perform federal needs-analysis to determine eligibility. Review and evaluate student appeals. Verify information according to federal process. Implement NU based awarding guidelines. Streamline application flow from the dissemination of information to the receipt of completed forms. Ensure compliance with federal regulations and institutional policy. Determine the nature of any outstanding problems or issues and analyze the best approach for a resolution. Perform audits of federal eligibility and adjust aid accordingly
Coop Stipend Program. Assist with the administration of the coop stipend program. Work with Co-op and Career Development Office to award and process all coop stipends. Adjust aid as needed according to federal and institutional regulations
Provide administrative and support services to the Director of Financial Aid School of Law and to the Office of Admissions and Financial Aid. Follow up with students as necessary. Order supplies. Assist with spreadsheets and other research vehicles. Supervise, hire and train work-study employees. Ensure adequate student staffing. Employ mature, knowledgeable students with the discipline to learn and comply with federal regulations and institutional policy.
Counseling and advising students. Counsel and advise students on financial aid process, awarding and financing options. Through appointments, e-mail, written correspondence, and telephone communication explain financial aid process. Provide effective and instructive financial strategies for prospective and current students. Review student bills against their financial aid award, advise on how much should be paid and by when. Process refund requests. Follow through on problem resolution, ensuring the students' needs and concerns are met.
Engage in outreach with prospective students. Call students as needed to review all financial aid options. Maintain social media and websites that are used at NUSL to communicate with prospective students.
Loan Deferral and Forgiveness Program. Notify alumni of application process. Create spreadsheets and administer the program two times a year. Process repayment checks, answer alumni/ae questions pertaining to eligibility, deadlines and repayment. Enter pertinent information in the Access database.
Qualifications: Must have bachelor's degree plus 3-5 years progressively responsible experience in financial aid or student financial services. Strong familiarity with financial aid rules and regulations. Extensive customer service experience. Must be strongly committed to customer service and be able to deal diplomatically and effectively with difficult customers. Empathetic professional who can assess needs, solve problems and prioritize heavy workload. High degree of discretion required in handling sensitive and confidential information. Strong familiarity with Microsoft Office software, Banner and PowerFaids desired.
