West Chester University, a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, seeks to hire an Assistant Director for the Center for Civic Engagement & Social Impact (CCESI). This is a full-time position within the Division of Student Affairs, awarded as one of the "Most Promising Places to Work in Student Affairs" by Diverse: Issues in Higher Education for the second year in a row.
WCU serves approximately 17,000 students at the undergraduate and graduate levels, 23% identify as Hispanic/Latino, Black, Asian, and Native American Indian nations, and 24% are Pell grant eligible. Under the supervision of the Director of the Center for Civic Engagement & Social Impact, the Assistant Director leads efforts to promote and support co-curricular civic engagement. The Assistant Director is responsible for developing and managing community-based opportunities designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective participation in democratic life as agents of positive social change. The Associate Director works closely with student organizations and other departments across the Division of Student Affairs, and is also a member of the WCU Resource Pantry Oversight Team – playing a key role in efforts to address student basic needs insecurity.
Providing strategic leadership and oversight of the department’sco-curricular, community-based student leadership programs designed to enhance civic knowledge, skills, values, and competencies
Developing and coordinating civic engagement trainings, reflections, and other student development opportunities through the department’s Social Impact Leadership Academy and theDivision’s Community Engagement Curriculum
Leading efforts to recruit, train, and retain student leaders for sustained participation in the department’s signature leadership programs, including RamCorps and America Reads Youth Mentoring (ARYM)
Developing and administering assessments and evaluations of the department’s signature leadership programs
Managing the department’s student employee hiring processes, paperwork, agreements, and log sheets, including Federal Work Study documentation
Ensuring that the WCU Resource Pantry is adequately staffed and operational
Leading efforts to recruit, train, and retain Resource Pantry paraprofessionals & student leaders
Providing daily oversight and supervision of Resource Pantry paraprofessionals & student leaders
Overseeing the curation and dissemination of the Resource Pantry newsletter
Identifying and implementing strategic efforts for attracting incoming, new, and existing students to sustained civic engagement
Providing oversight and strategic leadership of the Alternative Break Program and the MLK Day of Service
Overseeing the curation and dissemination of the RamServe newsletter
Advising and providing consultations to students interested in civic & community engagement
Leveraging partnerships and networks to support students in identifying post graduation public service opportunities/careers (e.g., Public Service Career Panels)
Developing and implementing initiatives designed to recognize, celebrate, and/or award WCU students for exemplary commitment to civic & community engagement
Overseeing the department’s participation and contributions to the Division’s co-curricular transcript initiative
Advising and supporting Student Affairs departments and student organizations interested in collaboration and community engagement
Tracking the community engagement projects (and service hours) of campus student organizations
Managing the department’s social media accounts/platforms
Supporting voter education and engagement efforts, including the supervision of CEEP and/or Democracy Fellows
Developing evidence-based proposals for program changes to inform growth and improvement
Developing and acting as Chair of the CCESI Student Advisory Group
Master’s Degree in education, student affairs, social work or other field closely related to student and community development
At least 2 years of professional experience in appropriate levels and areas of specialization
Evidence of excellent communication (oral and written) and presentation skills
Experience with administrative duties such as budgeting, strategic planning, and assessment
Demonstrated ability to relate to a culturally diverse university community
Demonstrated ability to recruit, train, and supervise college students to participate in civic and community engagement activites
Experience developing and managing programs that promote civic and community engagement
Demonstrated ability to effectively engage students and/or communities via multimedia platforms
Understanding of theories, frameworks, or best practices for developing active & justice-oriented citizens
Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with higher education professionals
Understanding of issues related to basic needs insecurity (e.g., food and housing insecurity)
Demonstrated ability to multitask and successfully manage multiple projects at the same time
