Coordinate all operational functions of The Writing Center.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
(1) Student Employees: Managing daily operations of The Writing Center at University of Detroit Mercy by supervising, training, and mentoring student and part-time employees (by means of monthly training sessions, educational workshops, and events); and developing and refining policy and procedure documents for employees. (2)Customer Service: Establishing and maintaining customer service standards by evaluating employee adherence to training standards and protocols, and facilitating student, staff, and faculty inquiries about services. (3) Campus Outreach: Maintaining connections across colleges and campuses to promote The Writing Center’s services for all Detroit Mercy student groups, where relevant. Communicating with relevant offices to ensure successful functioning of The Writing Center (e.g. Student Financial Aid) and for successful cross-collaboration where applicable (e.g. CHP’s Student Services, SSC, CCPD, etc). Creating resources for internal TWC use and university dissemination. (4) Professional Development & Scholarly Research: The position also includes opportunities to conduct scholarly research and professional development related to writing/writing pedagogy, writing center theory and practice (including administration of), leadership, DEI, etc. (5) Website & Technology: Managing the center’s technology needs (website, scheduling software, etc.). (6) Budget & Payroll: Evaluating and managing the annual budget. This includes managing payroll and scheduling for student and part-time employees. (7) Assessment & Program Development: Participating in a variety of tasks related to program development, reporting, and assessment. (8) All other duties as assigned.
Education: A college degree and a professional certificate or graduate degree Experience: Two years to five years
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of writing theory and practice, and knowledge of DEI principles for a university setting (for employees, student body, and university-at-large) given the university’s mission.
Job may require lifting light weight objects (1 to 10 pounds) with no repetitive bending or stooping. Occasionally lift average weight objects (1 to 10 pounds).
Regular exposure to favorable conditions such as those found in a normal office.
Commensurate with experience
Monday – Friday, 8:30am – 5:00pm
