Reporting to MCAD’s Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the Associate Vice President of Technology (AVPT) is the senior ITS leader of the college and instrumental in supporting MCAD’s vision in educating the next generation of creative, cultural leaders. The AVPT is responsible for the management and security of the college’s academic, business/administrative and integrated technological assets and infrastructure including its services, shared, and secured systems. The position will also lead the coordination of institution wide technology planning, budgeting, coordination and policy. Additionally the AVP provides integral support and advice to Academic Affairs as they plan for equipment, software, hardware, etc. to ensure that the college’s resources are at the best level for delivering excellent academic and co-curricular programming. The AVP leads the process for developing college wide policies and best practices for safely and effectively managing and using technological assets and systems. The AVP builds strong and productive relationships with all university leaders and constituents, communicating with and advising the MCAD community on technology data structures, policies, standards, procedures, methodology, etc. in order to achieve an integrated technology strategy that supports the college’s goals. The Assistant Vice President of Technology must be sensitive to college needs, employee and student goodwill, and overall brand equity of MCAD as an employer and educational institution.
Liaison with Academic Departments:
Research the pathway and estimate costs for short and long term technology solutions for resource enhancement in order to support excellence in academic programming
Assist in providing purchasing research, vendor selection, licensing administration, and vendor maintenance in order to provide advice and scenario planning options for academic technological initiatives
Serve as main vendor contact for technology acquisitions and purchases (software, hardware, capital assets, subscriptions, upgrades, installations, etc.)
Lead Technology teams in acquiring and maintaining inventories (including the Student Laptop programs and faculty and staff technology needs)
Serve on Academic Cabinet and other ad-hoc committees as needed
Facilitate and manage academic technology capital budgeting process
Liaison with Administrative/Support Departments:
Work with Director of Information Technology and other departments (in particular the Business Office) and the external auditors to ensure ongoing best practices and regulatory requirements for security purposes
Supervise the Information Technology Area to provide on-going assessment and design functions for MCAD's primary information systems and customized applications and documentation of SOPs (through KB/Wiki or other tools)
Work with the Human Resources, Student Affairs and Registrar (Records) teams to ensure the security of information
Vet, develop, plan, manage and estimate the costs for upgrades, changes, licensure needs, and associated budget for administrative technology
Work closely with department leaders to plan and action new implementations and/or upgrades
Serve on Facilities Planning Committee and other ad hoc committees
Assist in providing purchasing research, vendor selection, licensing administration, and vendor maintenance in order to provide advice and scenario planning options for non-academic technological initiatives
Ensure that disaster recovery and business continuity plans are appropriate
Recommend and implement Information Technology and Information Systems policies and procedures at the departmental and administrative level in order to ensure the consistency and maintainability of existing systems and applications
Provide overarching assessments of current systems and consideration of new systems to VP/CFO and PAC periodically
Plan collaboratively the implementation of new systems and provide guidance to IT professionals, faculty, and staff who are involved
Analyze and present the costs, value, and risks involved in managing and changing technology to suggest scenarios for action to senior leadership
Review all hardware and software acquisition and maintenance contracts with the participation of appropriate staff and faculty
Compile and submit to the VP/CFO and Executive Leadership Committee (ELC) the overall budget for technology annually
Serve as the senior spokesperson and key resource for the technological aspects of strategic plan initiatives and campus master planning
Proactively pursues continuing education and professional development in order to maintain knowledge about changes in the industry
Hire, develop, manage, and retain talented and qualified staff
Serve as a facilitator, convener, bridge-builder, and mediator across campus to cultivate confidence in the technology infrastructure
Provide supervision and leadership for the daily operations and strategic planning for following teams, including development, management and enforcement of policy and procedure:
Information Technology (including systems/network administration)
Computer Support Help Desk
Performs other duties as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer.
Represents MCAD’s vision, purpose, and values in day to day work and interactions with MCAD students, staff, faculty, and campus guests, as well as the greater community.
This position has supervisory responsibility over all Technology departments, including IT Services, and Help Desk.
Masters in Information Systems or related discipline strongly preferred; Bachelors in Information Systems with equivalent technical/managerial experience is acceptable
7 or more years work experience in design, implementation, and management of information systems and academic services required
4 or more years supervisory/management experience required
Significant experience in an art, design, or other creative educational environment preferred
Strong understanding of technology, network and business practices, required.
Demonstrated communication skills (verbal and written) with varied levels and types of constituents at a higher education institution (faculty, students, administration, staff)
Demonstrated project and budget management
Demonstrated ability to value and work in a diverse environment
Demonstrated ability to present complex information to community members and leaders in a way that results in appropriate and confident decision making
Advanced Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, data tables, etc.) experience required.
Strong problem solving skills and technical aptitude.
Demonstrated ability to facilitate communication and collaborate across departments.
Certification/Licensure not required for this position.
