The Bursar is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Office of Student Financial Services (SFS). Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of SFS, the Bursar will be responsible for the following:
Hire and train all members of the Student Financial Services Staff as well as conduct annual performance evaluations for the team
Create a work environment and a team that is collegial, diverse and inclusive.
Maintain office policies and procedures as needed and keep updated business practices to achieve institutional goals. The Bursar will conduct regular assessment of these processes to make immediate changes that will positively impact the student experience.
Offer students the highest level of customer service through the billing and collections process in using the Banner system. The Bursar will review and make necessary changes to the daily operations as well as enhance the system during a review at the conclusion of each semester.
Work with the Financial Aid Office to manage compliance of the federal aid disbursement requirements while maintaining service to students, parents and alumni. The disbursement of financial aid and student refunds is a critical role of this office and the Bursar must ensure it is timely and accurate.
Ensure accurate reporting of 1098Ts, disbursement as well as any other federal, state and university reporting.
Oversee the safeguarding and deposit of all cash and checks received by the Student Financial Services staff and the Student Service Representatives.
Collaborate and work daily with the other offices within the Student Service Center which include Financial Aid, Registrar, and International Student Services. The Bursar will also establish partnerships across the campus as well as with outside vendors.
Responsible for the accurate and timely collection of tuition, room and board, and other student fees for each of the three offered semesters.
Support students and parents through their payment options and payment plan. The Bursar has the authority to negotiate in-house payment plans and special circumstances for families.
Meet regularly with the Assistant Controller in the Finance Office to ensure that the processing between the two offices is timely, accurate and optimal.
Responsible for managing collection agency relationships and the general oversight of assigning accounts to agencies.
Experience in leading systems implementation and integration efforts with the offices of admission, housing, and the division of technology services.
Responsible for the management of all facets of Banner Accounts Receivable and CashNet software including implementing and testing software upgrades, ensuring programming and rules have been correctly established, and coordinating processes and programs to create efficient interfaces between Banner modules and the university’s 3rd party software that interfaces with it. The Bursar will partner with the Data Enrollment Specialist on data and technology maintenance, automation and new technology initiatives within the division and university.
Minimum of five to eight years of progressively responsible and demonstrated leadership experience in the successful management and administration of a comprehensive bursar’s office. Five years supervisory experience.
In-depth understanding of complex organizations, policies, processes, and systems supporting student-centered operations.
Experience in facilitating systems implementation and integration efforts.
Demonstrated experience in change management and organizational assessment.
Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred in Accounting, Business Administration, Higher Education Administration, or other related discipline.
Experience with Banner software and Cashnet Cashiering System.
