The Office of Civic Engagement & Social Responsibility (CESR) at Towson University is accepting applications for an Assistant Director for Civic Engagement to coordinate civic learning and democratic engagement programs, ensuring that students, faculty, and staff are provided with experiences focused on democratic engagement, advocacy, and environmental/sustainability educational opportunities; research innovative programs to bring onto TU's campus that foster a better understanding of civic learning and democratic engagement; engage with students through participation in campus and community events; establish partnerships for programs with campus departments; provide information to the campus community regarding civic engagement programs, initiatives, and accomplishments; assess the effectiveness of civic engagement programs; and develop ways to enhance the experience of programs for the campus community.
Supervise the Coordinator of Community Outreach and two Graduate Assistants, by providing direction, coordination, and consultation for their responsibilities in the areas of civic engagement and environmental initiatives. Coordinate and lead Towson University’s voter engagement efforts, including the creation of strategic action plans and annual reports, overseeing the TU Votes Coalition, coordinating voter registration and education programs, ongoing communication strategy with stakeholders inside and outside of campus, supervising/advising Andrew Goodman Student Ambassadors, supporting on-campus vote center operations, and representing Towson University as part of local, regional, and national initiatives as needed. Work with Student & Academic Affairs to support student/staff/faculty-led CLDE initiatives including the Issues to Action Series, Civic Action Month, facilitating campus conversations on Freedom Square, co-sponsored programs alongside student organizations and academic units, and special events. Work with appropriate campus and community partners to respond to needs related to political/democratic and environmental engagement. Work with Housing & Residence Life and relevant academic units to enhance the Political Engagement Learning Community. Supervise student employees by providing direction and ensuring a meaningful learning experience.
Identify and implement appropriate evaluation procedures to measure the impact of civic engagement programs on the community and campus participants, including but not limited to: research best practices for evaluating community impact, administering evaluations, collecting and analyzing data, preparing reports to communicate findings. Coordinate environmental engagement opportunities and initiatives alongside the Office of Sustainability, including the annual Environmental Conference, Eco-Reps Program, Campus Sustainability Month, the Retreat for Environmental Action, Campus Race to Zero Waste, and the support of zero-waste events on campus. Organize all operations for TEDxTowsonU. Represent CESR in campus/community committees relevant to role, including Tiger Advocacy Advisory Team, Baltimore Collegetown Network, Students Learn Students Vote Coalition, etc. Assist with other duties within the Division of Student Affairs as assigned.
Two years of experience.
Experience with civic engagement, community engagement, and initiatives.
Experience working with diverse student populations, commitment to social justice and continuous learning, development, and research on current trends and best practices.
Ability to work with a wide range of students, staff, and faculty in a diverse college setting.
Master’s Degree in Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Counseling, or a closely related field.
Proficiency in Spanish or other languages, in addition to English.
