The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife is seeking a Academic Advisor. This is a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.
The primary purpose of the Academic Advisor position is to review application materials and advise undergraduate Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Sciences (FWCS) majors enrolled through Oregon State University's (OSU's) Ecampus. The incumbent will assist with recruitment and retention efforts to meet Department and University objectives.
The incumbent will help students match their personal strengths and interests to opportunities within the University curriculum in general and the FWCS Undergraduate Program specifically. The incumbent will advise students on their career paths; therefore, they should have a strong background in fisheries and wildlife or a related field. Due to the unique, applied nature of this field, the background allows for helping students set realistic career expectations.
The incumbent will work with diverse student populations, including ethnic minorities, older than average students, disabled and neurodivergent students, and those enrolled from remote areas, some of which are outside the U.S. Important aspects of the work include developmental advising, attention to detail, and frequent contact with other units at the University.
Typically requires Bachelors Degree in field related to work assigned.
Bachelor's degree in Fisheries and Wildlife or a related STEM discipline (e.g., Biology, Natural Resources, Marine Biology, Environmental Sciences, Zoology).
Experience in student advising, counseling, mentoring, or administering student services at the college or university level.
Ability to work occasional nights and weekends to meet the schedule constraints of Ecampus students.
Competency with Microsoft Office applications including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Powerpoint, Access, and Excel as well as with use of web browsers such as Chrome and Firefox.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills including video conferencing and telephone skills.
Experience in organizing programs, preparing academic materials, and managing databases.
Demonstrated ability to work as an effective team member.
Strong interpersonal communication skills with demonstrated ability to work effectively with students, staff, faculty, and administrators.
Competency working with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures.
A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity, equity and inclusion.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions.
The position may require occasional nights and weekends to meet the schedule constraints of Ecampus students.
The position may require overnight and/or weekend travel associated with participation in college events, professional networking, and program development.
