The UAB Assistant Manager position serves on the advisor team for the University Activities Board within the MSU Union. This individual is responsible for supervision and advising of students as they collaboratively carry out UAB’s mission to host events for students, by students and to enhance the Spartan experience at Michigan State University. They directly work with both graduate assistants and student staff responsible for planning over 50 inclusive events appealing to our diverse student population. The Assistant Manager is additionally responsible for assisting and / or leading in the management of UAB budget tracking, marketing efforts, front desk projects, hiring and evaluating student staff, and other initiatives determined along the way to meet the needs of the students. They will oversee the MSU Union and UAB Front Desk operation and student team members. Some night and weekend time is expected of the person in this position to serve as the on-site advisor at events. The Assistant Manager is responsible for fundraising efforts contributing to UAB’s operational budget that include, but are not limited to, corporate sales, sponsorships, and events such as the bi-annual Arts & Crafts Show.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post-bachelor degree work, such as a Masters in Administration or a Behavioral Science field; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in administration, program development and personnel development and training; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Written and verbal fluency in foreign language may be required.
Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities, including [communities of color], in the consideration of impacts and outcomes of a decision-making process.
An understanding of the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities.
Demonstrated skills of leadership and communication.
An understanding of how to promote student learning and academic success.
Obvious interest and enthusiasm for working with students.
Experience working with college students or community groups in an advisory capacity .
Experience in event planning and management on a college campus.
