The Associate Dean for OMS4 and Graduate Medical Education is responsible for the development, evaluation and support of osteopathic graduate medicine programs affiliated with the College and for the 4th year osteopathic medical students as they schedule the OMS IV year and as they progress through the OMS IV year and match to residency programs.
The position provides assistance to VCOM affiliated programs to meet all accreditation and regulatory requirements for GME, and assists with conducting the professional education programs offered by OMNEE.
The position provides VCOM students in year OMS I through OMS IV with understanding the requirements of GME, GME placement and decision making.
The roles above account for .6 of the FTE. The position is also committed to .1 FTE educational research and institutional outcomes research.
The person filling this position will also assist in teaching for VCOM and service commitment. If the person filling the position wishes to maintain a clinical practice.
Oversee the Division of post-graduate affairs on the Louisiana Campus.
Develop expertise in ACGME accreditation and serve as an advocate to develop ACGME accredited programs affiliated with VCOM and VCOM’s consortium including:
Introducing ACGME requirements and advising current osteopathic residencies on requirements to become an ACGME institution / program.
Advising and assisting AOA and ACGME programs on the benefits of affiliation with VCOM and VCOM’s role as an academic sponsor institution to assist individual residency programs, and
Advising and personally assisting VCOM affiliated core hospitals to develop new GME programs and the processes provided to assist with initial establishment and accreditation requirements (done in conjunction with VCOM’s postgraduate training consortium).
Development of the post-graduate department on the Louisiana Campus to be an ongoing academic and research resource for affiliated GME programs and for students.
Develop presentations and materials and conduct presentations to VCOM ` clinical sites with the potential for GME on the VCOM affiliation and
Maintain current GME affiliated programs by meeting with the VCOM VA
programs annually and by providing assistance through annual visits and faculty development programs.
Work with the Sim Center and residency programs in the development of
educational milestones to enter 4th year and to graduate and competency
Work closely with the Simulation Center (and VIAStar) in the development of new curricular materials for resident education.
Assist VCOM and VIAStar in the development and presentation of
competency-based workshops for GME.
Assist the sites by working with VCOM’s research department to develop new programs to assist residents to meet the research needs of their programs in the affiliated sites.
Serve as a liaison to the site for assisting with research development and CME.
Assist VCOM to become a resource to the affiliated sites for CME including providing CME speakers from time to time, assisting the participant to obtain CME credit for providing clinical education to the VCOM students (allopathic and osteopathic) and for attending VCOM’s CME.
Assist VCOM to become an accreditor for allopathic as well as osteopathic
Plan and develop a formal advising program for the VCOM students
Develop, in collaboration with the Associate Deans for GME a formal advising program for VCOM medical students on preparing for and applying for GME. a. Present to the students each year on entering GME and on preparing for GME in each year, OMS I through OMS IV.
In the OMS III year, participate in and coordinate hospital day and the Introduction to GME education that follows.
Utilize the Clinical Chairs and the Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs
as a team to assist in implementing the program.
Assure the following areas are covered in the event, so they will be prepared and position well to enter into GME on:
how to make career choices
how to develop and demonstrate the skills they must acquire (in the OMS 3 year and early OMS 4 year) for auditioning well and finding GME placement.

Begin the process of meeting with the Louisiana campus students in the 3 year so to advise them career choices and residency options based upon their performance.
Meet with each student individually as they return to campus for COMPE testing and/or required rotations on campus.
Oversee the planning and approval of their OMS IV rotations.
Oversee the Match process for 4th year students, assisting students where needed. Assist unmatched students to find positions. Attend and assist with the residency celebration process.
Assist the Dean with the MSPE process.
Plan the advising programs, curriculum and agenda with the Associate Deans for OMS4 and GME from the Virginia, Carolinas and Auburn campuses as well.
Track data on GME placement of VCOM graduates annually and seek for continuous quality improvement.
Work with the Clinical Chairs so they understand and become proficient in their role in OMS 4 advising.
Develop new OMS 4 core site relationships including affiliations with institutions who have current ACGME programs to assist in sufficiently meeting the needs of the 4th year core clinical rotations to assist the graduating class in exposure to PGY 1 positions. (This should be done in conjunction with the Associate Deans for Post-Graduate Affairs from the other VCOM campuses, decreasing the workload for each)
Plan and provide some of the instruction in on-site and poly-com faculty development programs from time to time for the VCOM affiliated GME programs for both teaching and research.
Serve as a liaison with the programs for post-graduate clinical educational offerings of the College including those in clinical medicine, simulation, and research.
Additional Faculty Member duties:
Teach within the curriculum in lectures and or laboratory each year as assigned by the Dean.
Serve as a liaison for the College with other academic sites, national colleges and agencies, and appropriate entities that align with the Physician’s discipline.
Serve as an active member of a College Committee as assigned and the Clinical Chairs Departmental meetings.
Provide interviews and other College service from time to time as requested by the Dean.
Represent the College in a positive and productive manner in all arenas (internal and external) as assigned by the Dean including but not limited to AACOM, ACGME meetings, and AOA meetings.
Teach in the Clinical Skills Course from time to time as skills allow.
Evaluate and provide feedback for students in the simulation center on Simulation teaching events.
Evaluate and provide feedback for students in the simulation center on standardized patient exams and COMPE exams.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Graduation from an AOA or LCME accredited college of medicine.
Eligibility for licensure to practice medicine in Louisiana.
As a condition of continued employment, the Physician must be “Board Certified” in the Physician’s area of practice, or must become so certified: (a) within three (3) years of commencement of employment hereunder; or (b) within three (3) years after any expiration of previous certification, whichever is later.
Experience as a full-time faculty member at a COM or in a residency program and prior leadership experience.
