DESCRIPTION: The Assistant Director of Recreation works under the direct supervision of the Director of the Recreation and is a member of the department's leadership team. The primary function of this position is to provide leadership and direction in all programming areas of the department, which includes Outdoor Programs, Intramural Sports, Club Sports, and Fitness/Wellness programs. The Assistant Director oversees approximately 35 student staff and volunteers and is responsible for a variety of operations of Recreation programming on campus including but not limited to student staffing, programming, instructing, logistic management, development, and assessment. Additionally, the Assistant Director will be responsible for the overall management of the Recreation Department in the Director's absence. The position works closely with the Resident Director for Recreation.
Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Assists Director with current and new student trip leader training and development.
Co-creates Intramural schedule including calendar of events and sports offered.
Help oversee gear rental shop: rentals, inventory, trip sign-ups, rental shop staff, etc.
Assists in developing on and off-campus programming: workshops, weekend and break trips, events, etc.
Assists Director with First Year Journey planning, preparation, and execution.
Help develop and oversee policies and procedures.
Oversee program curriculum via wilderness medical course sponsorship.
Help develop and implement logistics and risk management for all club sports including both on and off-site activities.
Assist with advertising programs and network with internal and external constituents.
Manage, hire, train, and supervise intramural staff.
Advise club sports, budget management, training, and scheduling.
Develop community through recreation programming.
Create innovative and effective programs for the student body (e.g. Equipment Rentals, Collaborative programming, etc.)
Performs other duties and special projects as assigned or directed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience required. Must possess or be eligible to obtain Wilderness First Responder (current with CPR) within 6 months. A valid driver's license is required. A current DMV printout demonstrating a good driving record must be presented prior to offer of employment. Preferred training includes AMGA SPI, Swift Water Rescue, Avalanche Certification, Leave No Trace Trainer, Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or fitness training certifications. The ideal candidate is committed to an understanding of the values of higher education, student and community development, and diversity. Candidates with or in the process of completing a Master's Degree are preferred. Candidate must have the sensitivity and ability to work with the traditional college-age student, advise staff, develop and implement programs, produce effective outcomes, work effectively both individually and with groups, use independent judgment, and display decision-making ability. Flexibility to adjust work schedule to meet the needs of students and staff is necessary and will require attendance at evening and weekend events, as well as overnight retreats and training. Experience using the Internet, e-mail, and competence using a variety of Windows-based computer programs is desired. Due to the outdoor education component of this position, a desirable candidate will be able to carry 50 lbs for 8 hours/day on consecutive days. Final candidates must be able to pass a pre-employment physical. Must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
