The USC Iovine and Young Academy is seeking a Fabrication Lab Specialist to provide technical expertise in the implementation and use of equipment in its Creator Studio student makerspace. Reporting to the Makerspace Manager, the ideal candidate will have experience with spaces that house advanced or specialized classroom and makerspace technologies and equipment, including metal and wood fabricating equipment, 3D printers, laser cutters, large and desktop CNC machines and other fabricating equipment, and finishing equipment and technologies. The Fabrication Lab Specialist will advise and/or assist faculty, students and staff in the implementation and use of equipment and facilities and will guide and mentor students that are engaged in class projects.
Major Job Accountabilities Include:
Provides specialized studio/laboratory/facility technical expertise to support faculty, students, and staff in the implementation and use of advanced classroom technologies and equipment, including but not limited to metal and wood fabricating equipment, 3D printers, laser cutters, large and desktop CNC machines and other fabricating equipment, finishing equipment and technologies, etc.
Plans and coordinates lab exercises, lectures, and demonstrations with instructors and student services staff. Instructs students, staff, and/or instructors in the proper use of classroom equipment and materials.
Supervises the operation and maintenance of the student makerspace. Provides advice on lab setup or design, equipment acquisition or enhancement, lab operation, monitoring, and maintenance.
Contributes to the development and implementation of lab policies and procedures. Ensures compliance with health and safety standards of operation.
Assists with controlling and monitoring equipment and materials inventory.
Assists with training of lab assistants, including student workers.
Schedules lab availability to meet the needs of students and faculty.
Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
2 years in an additive/subtractive fabrication role, including the use of specialized classroom and maker space technologies and equipment (see examples above under Major Job Accountabilities).
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work successfully within a team of students, staff and faculty members.
Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends.
Masterâs degree. Combined experience/education may be considered as a substitute for an advanced degree.
Understanding of higher education operations, and experience in mentoring students in maker practices and procedures.
3-5 years of relevant work experience.
Ability to work some regular evening or weekend hours.
