The Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards (OSCCS) supports the holistic development of the student experience by educating students about behavioral expectations, enforcing the Student Code of Conduct (Code) through a fair and educational process that fosters campus safety, accountability, and personal/organizational development. The OSCCS ensures proper investigation and adjudication of alleged Code violations, or any other regulation as the University President and/or Board of Trustees may direct. The OSCCS adheres to the established procedures under the Code when resolving alleged conduct violations with fairness, integrity, and objectivity for all parties involved, consistent with the university's educational goals. The OSCCS is a newly conceived office under the Vice President of Student and Campus Life and recently moved from the Office of the Presidents purview.

Cornell University is excited to announce the search for a newly created Director of the Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards (OSCCS) position in the Division of Student and Campus Life.The inaugural Director of the OSCCS reports to the Robert W. and Elizabeth C. Staley Dean of Students and serves as a member of the Dean's leadership team. The Director is responsible for the collaborative development, management, and evaluation of the university's student conduct system and cases arising out of the Code on a campus of 24,000 students and over 1,000 student organizations, including a robust Greek life presence. This position receives reports of and ensures proper investigation and resolution of alleged violations of the Code, or of any other regulations as the University President and/or Board of Trustee may direct. In this work, the Director utilizes an educational and restorative approach in managing and resolving student conduct concerns. The Director also works collaboratively with campus partners to develop and facilitate campus-wide behavioral education and prevention efforts, setting strategic priorities focused on risk reduction, prevention, and education. Additionally, this position oversees all staff hiring, supervision, and ongoing development for the employees of the OSCCS team.
Summary of Responsibilities
Leads the OSSCS and oversees the strategic development, management, and assessment of a student conduct system that focuses on the holistic development of students.
Oversees the intake and resolution options (investigation and adjudication, alternative dispute resolution, restorative justice, etc.) of alleged Code violations for students, student groups, or organizations (including fraternities, sororities, and living groups), or any other regulations as the University President and/or Board of Trustee may direct.
Ensures consistent and timely attention to all student conduct referrals via appropriate student conduct processes and handles all complaints with fairness, integrity, and objectivity consistent with the educational and rehabilitative goals of the student conduct system.
Oversees the hiring and training of hearing and review panel chair(s) and directs the training and administration of the Hearing and Review Panel.
Collaborates with graduate or professional student advocates (called Complainant and Respondent Code Counselors), who provide free assistance to Respondents and Complainants in the capacity of an advisor. This collaboration includes, but is not limited to: setting job qualifications, establishing hiring processes, and training priorities for all Counselors. Collaborates with the Student Assembly (SA) and Graduate Professional Student Assembly (GPSA) and the Office of the Student Advocate (OSA) to appoint Lead Code Counselors, and serves as an advocate and resource for the Counselors while overseeing their compensation.
Oversees the development, implementation, and evaluation of all educational, alternative, restorative resolution options and sanctions used to manage and resolve student conduct concerns.
Collaborates with campus partners to develop and facilitate campus-wide behavioral education and prevention efforts.
Effectively implement newly adopted Student Code of Conduct and department organizational structure dedicated to educational, rehabilitation, and restorative student conduct practices, utilizing an applied understanding of student development theory, including the impact of student behavior on overall student success.
Cultivate and lead a diverse team dedicated to the holistic development of students and navigating student behavior issues, having demonstrated success managing a team.
Navigate and work collaboratively in a student-centered environment committed to the important values of shared governance, with an enthusiasm for and demonstrated commitment to supporting a student body that is broadly diverse with regard to gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, gender identity, and religion, among other factors.
Exceptional interpersonal, communication, planning, reasoning, organizational and project management skills, with an ability to multi-task in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
Master's degree and a minimum of seven (7) years of professional experience in College Student Personnel Administration, Higher Education, Educational Leadership, Counseling, or a closely related field with five (5) years of direct experience in student conduct.
Demonstrated experience working with college student conduct systems, including intake, investigation, adjudication, and sanctions.
Experience working with an educational and restorative approach to student conduct issues, including experience with alternative dispute resolutions and restorative justice practices.
Experience with adjudicating policy violations made by student organizations, including specifically, social Greek organizations.
Familiarity with different assessment methodologies and applications in strategic planning.
Experience in building collaborative partnerships with faculty, administrators, students, parents/families, and community partners.
Experience working in a legalistic student conduct process.
Strong working knowledge of higher education legal issues, including HEOA, FERPA, and Clery.
Advanced degree in a relevant discipline.
Experience developing student-centered behavioral policies, procedures, and prevention efforts.
Experience with evidentiary hearings and other adversarial and/or administrative proceedings in a quasi-legalistic student conduct process.
Experience developing and implementing an educational and restorative approach to student conduct issues, including alternative dispute resolutions and restorative justice practices.
Experience developing, implementing, and revising a Student Code of Conduct.
Experience with conduct software.
