Dept Marketing Statement Each residential college at UC Santa Cruz employs a team of academic advisors who work with students through the entirety of their undergraduate career. College academic advising serves as the generalist branch of advising at UC Santa Cruz, focusing on all career-based requirements (general education, university, college requirements) and applying academic senate policy including academic standing, progress, and time-to-degree. College Advising works collaboratively with others at the college to ensure a coordinated approach to serving students' academic, residential, and developmental needs, and works collaboratively with academic advisors in the academic departments and with other advisors on campus.
The primary mission of college advising is to assist students in identifying and clarifying their academic directions and educational goals, and to help them to develop meaningful and compatible plans and success strategies. Involves counseling students on academic program policies and issues. Monitors student academic progress and assists students in making appropriate educational choices and decisions. Conducts informational sessions and provides advice.
Applies skills as a seasoned, experienced academic advisor, provides advice to students on the full range of requirements for a, college with a wide variety of course requirements. Recommends solutions to progression and requirement issues. Advice may include not-clearly-defined programs such as independent study programs, interdisciplinary programs, or multiple programs. Utilizes knowledge of current research and best practices in higher education relevant to student development and knowledge of university policies and procedures to provide individual advising and programs that address the academic and developmental needs of diverse populations of undergraduates. Works independently under general supervision.
Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule Salary Information: $52,500- $54,000/Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Job Duties 20% - Participates in the development and implementation of college-based student programs and workshops with learning outcomes related to academic and student success (first year advising, peer advising programs, freshman and transfer student orientations, academic success workshops, etc.). This may include supervision of peer advisors, mentors, or other student staff.
10% - Counsels individual students from diverse backgrounds to assist them in the clarification of their educational goals and the development of realistic educational plans to achieve those goals. Advises undeclared students on major selection.
10% - Provides advice and assistance to students on all aspects of their academic experience, including progression and requirement matters for the university and college.
10% - Determines barriers, distractions, and complications affecting a student's academic success, helps students recognize these key non-academic issues, and makes appropriate referrals for additional therapeutic counseling and / or assistance from other units.
10% - Advises students on a wide range of course possibilities and / or ways to complete degree requirements that may not be clearly defined.
10% - Participates in quarterly student progress monitoring processes.
5% - Evaluates and advises students in petitions for exceptions to college and university requirements.
5% - Identifies students with GPA or progress problems, advises students, and recommends appropriate courses of action by the college (e.g., academic probation, barred enrollment).
5% - Assists faculty on determining core course scheduling needs for student progression to graduation.
5% - Advises on special eligibility requirements such as Honors programs / field study/ internships.
5% - Confirms that students have met college, university, and general education requirements for degree completion.
5% - In consultation with other advising staff, the provost, and/or with advising leadership in the Division of Undergraduate Education, develop, implement, and/or consult on additional projects in support of undergraduate academic advising and student success, retention, and graduation.
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
Related academic advising experience in a university setting, including analyzing educational records and applying academic policy.
Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Ability to build knowledge of multiple majors, minors, and academic enrichment opportunities.
Ability to build a thorough knowledge of college / university policies, procedures, and requirements.
Demonstrated skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving.
Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, ability to develop original ideas to solve problems.
Ability to multi-task.
Demonstrated excellent communication skills, including oral, written, and public speaking.
Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with students, faculty, staff, and parents of diverse social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds, and an understanding of the challenges faced by diverse student populations (including but not limited to first generation students, underrepresented minority students, students with disabilities, low-income students, LGBT students, non-traditional students, veterans) in higher education.
Knowledge of common university-specific computer application programs, and abilty to learn new systems.
Demonstrated ability as an effective team member, and the ability to exercise flexibility in a changing work environment.
Master's degree in a field related to academic advising, or equivalent work experience.
Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
