The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and home to Cornell University's second largest population of students, faculty and staff. The CALS Office of Professional Programs and Extended Learning (OPPEL) serves 150-200 full-time graduate students preparing for meaningful careers in corporate, not-for-profit, government and agency positions.
The Office of Professional Programs and Extended Learning is searching for a dynamic individual to join our team. This position will report to the Director of Professional Programs and Extended Learning, independently lead the career management function, providing career advising, placement support and industry connections to potential employment opportunities. Serve as the point person for professional graduate student career counseling and placement. Proactively assist students with developing skills; conduct ALS 5211 Career Readiness course and related workshops throughout the academic year. Provide 1:1 advising sessions and seek employment opportunities for qualified CALS Master of Professional Studies (MPS), Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) and Biological and Environmental Engineering, Master of Engineering (BEE MEng) students. Collaborate with the Cornell and CALS (undergraduate) Career Services, International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) and CALS fields of study within the Graduate School to provide superior support to students. Establish metrics and maintain post-graduate employment reports.
Build relationships with employers and alumni to develop a pipeline of job opportunities for CALS professional graduate students. Develop and execute strategies for effective employer outreach. Work with OPPEL director, colleagues in various CALS fields of study, and CALS Administration (Alumni Affairs and Development (AAD) and Student Services) to cultivate industry relationships for full-time, summer internship, and project-related opportunities across CALS graduate fields. Identify the scientific and technical qualifications expected by prospective employers and ensure student fit. Maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with students, employers, faculty, alumni and other career offices on campus. Build employer contact database and stay up to date on hiring trends.
Bachelor's degree in a scientific, business or technical field and a minimum of 2-4 years' experience in career development or talent acquisition of professional/technical staff or equivalent. Familiarity with graduate education, career advising and functional areas of employment for scientific professionals. Knowledge of career services resources and job search strategies. Demonstration of excellent interpersonal skills and oral and written communication. Effective time management, organizational and prioritization capabilities. Proven ability to work effectively to achieve established goals. Aptitude and ability to build and maintain a positive working relationship with colleagues, students, faculty, alumni and employers. Open to feedback and continuous improvement. Demonstrated maturity, judgment and professional etiquette. Knowledgeable of current computer systems, software applications, social media and database management tools.
Master's degree in a scientific, business or technical field. Three to five years' experience in a commercial, agency or not-for-profit organization, with proven success in human capital management, business or product development role. Familiarity with evolving trends in agriculture and life science professions and commercialization of new product concepts desirable. Experience in career resources, training and conducting student workshops and professional presentations desirable.
