ASSOCIATE VICE CHANCELLOR FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS AND DEAN CENTER FOR DIVERSITY AND INCLUSION
Washington University in St. Louis (Washington University) seeks a new Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (AVC) and Dean of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion (CDI), with a targeted appointment date of January 1, 2020. A leading, AAU-member research university whose recent investments in facilities and advising structures provide an unsurpassed undergraduate residential life experience, Washington University is infusing considerations of diversity and inclusion throughout every part of its operation, including multiple, concurrent signature initiatives proceeding from the Office of the Provost (http://diversity.wustl.edu), the Academy for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (the Academy), and the Department of Human Resources. The CDI is the student-facing piece of this strategic institutional priority.
The CDI was established in 2014 with initial leadership at the executive director level. This position was later elevated to a deanship and is now appointed at the Associate Vice Chancellor rank to reflect a heightened expectation that the role will provide vision, leadership, insight, and expertise on issues of diversity, inclusion, and social justice both to the Student Affairs division and to the Washington University administration and community. The CDI’s efforts address factors including race, color, ethnicity, gender, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, national origin, ability, religion, and socioeconomic background.
The CDI focuses on advocacy and policy development as it connects with undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. It plays an integral role in realizing the University’s core mission to develop students as future leaders in the diverse global community of the twenty-first century. It supports and advocates for students and student groups from international and historically underrepresented and/or marginalized populations, creates collaborative partnerships with others on campus, and promotes dialogue and social change supportive of a more inclusive campus climate. In collaboration with other diversity, equity, and inclusion leaders and departments, the CDI offers expertise, information, and insights to the Washington University administration and promotes activities that combat prejudice and promote social justice within the Washington University community and in the broader communities of St. Louis.
Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, the AVC will provide leadership in achieving Washington University’s strategic goals relating to diversity and inclusion, particularly as they relate to the student experience. The AVC will oversee both the CDI and the Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS), including budgetary and supervisory responsibilities. The AVC will serve as a key member of the Vice Chancellor’s executive team and participate in a variety of divisional programs and initiatives.
The AVC will collaborate closely with the Assistant Vice Chancellor of the Academy for Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (a new position and initiative) and the Vice Provost and Director of the new Center for the Study of Race, Ethnicity and Equity in ensuring that Washington University lives up to its aspirations to be a place where all community members feel empowered, valued, and respected. These three leaders will oversee the continued implementation of the University’s Commission on Diversity & Inclusion 2017 Report (https://diversity.wustl.edu/framework/commission-diversity-inclusion/). The AVC will also work closely with the Medical School’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.
Other key partnerships will include the University’s seven academic deans and their associates; five senior leaders in the Division of Student Affairs representing the areas of Student Support and Wellness, Student Success and Scholar Programs, Career Services, Student Engagement and Transition, and Athletics and Recreation. The AVC will serve as the Student Affairs liaison to the Interfaith Campus Ministries Association (IFCMA) in developing a religious, ethical, and spiritual life program housed at the CDI. The CDI administers and regularly evaluates the University’s Bias Report and Support System that provides a streamlined process for reporting and monitoring incidents of bias, hate and/or discrimination against students. The AVC will have the opportunity to teach in Washington University’s new graduate certificate program in higher education.
The CDI has a professional staff of three, including an Assistant Dean and Senior Scholar, a Training and Education Specialist, and an Administrative Assistant who report directly to the AVC, as well as cohorts of Graduate Assistants and Undergraduate Ambassadors. The OISS comprises an Executive Director reporting directly to the AVP and other team members. The AVC will have the opportunity and considerable discretion to build both infrastructure and programming for both offices, working from the CDI’s inviting new purpose-built space on the first floor of the Danforth University Center.
Pursuant to the findings and recommendations of A Report of the Steering Committee for Diversity & Inclusion (2014), Washington University has articulated a shared understanding of diversity and inclusion that is capacious and intellectually rigorous, but also particular to the history and present-day circumstances and aspirations of Washington University and the St. Louis region. Qualifications: An ideal candidate would be a strong leader with a significant track record of change management, innovation, and executive experience. An earned Master’s in an academic discipline, student affairs, student personnel administration, higher education administration, counseling, or another applicable field is required. A PhD, EdD or other terminal degree and committee service or leadership positions including but not limited to, national diversity and/or higher education national organizations, are preferred. A successful record of at least five years of staff supervisory and executive experience is strongly preferred. Previous professional experience and/or scholarship in multicultural affairs, diversity education, identity formation, international student services, or related work within higher education are strongly preferred, but related professional experience outside of higher education will also be considered. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to engage a wide variety of constituents, ranging from faculty to students to alumni and community leaders; to engage creative, diligent, professionally ambitious. and service-minded students and to cultivate and steward a resourceful community of alumni and parents. The successful candidate will evidence a comfort with ambiguity, a strong but flexible management style, a process orientation, proficiency in strategic planning and assessment, skill in eliciting institution-wide buy-in, readiness for collaboration and consultation with other campus diversity leadership, and the ability to execute strategic initiatives and meet project objectives in a timely manner.
