Reporting to the Director for Learning Partnerships, the Program Specialist for Learning Initiatives assists the Office for Learning Partnerships with strengthening co-curricular learning for students at Virginia Tech. As such, the Program Specialist works side-by-side with Student Affairs offices, units, and programs as champions for integrating the Aspirations for Student Learning into the culture of co-curricular experiences. Additionally, the Program Specialist supports the development and coordination of innovative, transformative, hands-on (sometimes-experimental) programs for students. To role model transformative practice, the Program Specialist also serves as the Program Director for the Thrive Living-Learning Community, a learning environment that promotes student self-discovery through a strengths-based philosophy. The Program Specialist assists with oversight of daily activities for the Office for Learning Partnerships including day-to-day communications and learning-centered engagement with colleagues and student staff.
Within the mission and vision of the Office for Learning Partnerships, provide consultation to student affairs offices, units, and programs to strengthen efforts that infuse learning into all student co-curricular experiences. To assist these efforts, the Program Specialist develops educational resources, cultivates tools for learning and reflection, documents learning experiences, and communicates the story of student learning at Virginia Tech through a variety of forums including social media, assessment, and communications materials.
Serve as the Program Director for the Thrive Living-Learning Community, overseeing strategic planning, operations, recruitment, marketing, student engagement, and assessment processes in collaboration with a student leadership team.
Assists with implementation of a strengths-based philosophy as a tool for aiding students in discovering their gifts, talents, and capacities, serving as a Strengths Consultant and coordinating engagement of the Strengths Consultant team including the day-to-day communication and logistical management of resources for educational offerings and ongoing professional development.
Assists with development and coordination of learning initiatives housed within the Office for Learning Partnerships including but not limited to living-learning communities, interacting with campus partners and student leaders to ensure long-term success.
The selected individual must be a seasoned educator with an unrelenting commitment to student success, learning and diversity. A master’s degree in a related field is required. Experience and understanding of positive psychology and student learning/development literature is essential. The Program Specialist for Learning Initiatives should be a collaborative self-starter with the highest level of communication, writing, administrative, and organizational skills. The enthusiastic support of Student Affairs’ Aspirations for Student Learning, the mission of Virginia Tech, and the land grant spirit are required.
