The Georgia Institute of Technology invites applications for the position of Service Learning and Partnerships Specialist in the Center for Serve-Learn-Sustain (SLS). The Center opened in August 2015 to launch and facilitate the Institute’s Quality Enhancement Plan, titled “Serve-Learn-Sustain.” The QEP is a component of our reaffirmation of accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. This campus-wide academic initiative aims to provide students with a multitude of curricular and co-curricular opportunities focused on the theme, “creating sustainable communities.” Serve-Learn-Sustain is designed to help students combine their academic and career interests with their desire to make worthwhile contributions to the world. We do this by facilitating broad-based, interdisciplinary efforts linking teaching and research to action, in Georgia, the United States, and around the globe. The position is a non-tenure track, academic faculty position at the level of academic professional. This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic and entrepreneurial experiential learning professional to work as part of a team to help shape the direction of an initiative that aims to transform the culture of a major technological institute and establish best practices for university engagement in some of the most challenging issues of our time.
The Service Learning & Partnerships Specialist will work closely with the Center’s Director and other Center staff. Responsibilities will include:
- Facilitate Service Learning & Community Engagement
Work with faculty across campus to help them incorporate service learning and community engagement related to sustainability, into courses at all levels of the curriculum, as well as some co-curricular programs. Specifically:
- Recruit and support faculty from all six Colleges, as well as some staff and students, as they incorporate service learning and community engagement around sustainable communities into their courses and programs. This involves one-on-one collaboration as well as engaging faculty in SLS programs;
- Facilitate thematic working groups bringing together faculty, staff, students, and partners to research, teach, and take action on specific issues related to sustainable communities in Atlanta and beyond;
- Develop teaching tools and resources;
- Collaborate with SLS staff and other units to develop structures and programs that support integration of sustainability-related service learning and community engagement into student learning across campus
- Actively participate in and contribute to national and international networks related to sustainability and service learning/community engagement, to learn from and contribute to sharing of best practices.
- Develop & Maintain Partnerships
Work closely with other SLS partnership staff to:
- Identify, develop and maintain partnerships with nonprofit, municipal, K-12, and other higher education partners, in Atlanta, across the country, and around the world, to engage in and advance learning and action related to sustainable communities. This will be done through one-on-one relationship building as well as participating in, and helping to run, alliances and networks;
- Support development and maintenance of industry partnerships, with an Industry Liaison reporting jointly to SLS and the Ray C. Anderson Center for Sustainable Business in the Scheller College of Business;
- Collaborate closely with and serve as a connector among Tech’s other key community-related initiatives and offices: Westside Communities Alliance, the Office of Government and Community Relations, and the Office of Leadership and Civic Engagement, CEISMC (K-12 outreach);
- Establish and facilitate a Partnership Working Group, comprising key campus stakeholders and strategic off-campus partners, as part of the Center’s governance structure;
- Identify and develop resources and initiatives for growth and collaborative learning between Georgia Tech and off-campus partners, and among partners themselves, that build mutual capacity to work together productively and with joy;
- Advise the SLS Academic Assessment Manager on establishing systems to assess partner relationships and conduct formative assessment throughout the year.
As part of a small team that works collaboratively, the Service Learning & Partnerships Specialist will also assist with other course, program, and administrative duties as needed. As the Center grows, this position may supervise or assist with supervision of administrative and professional staff.
Credentials and Experience

Minimum requirements include:
- An earned doctorate
- Strong background in service learning pedagogy and active engagement in the service learning field
Preferred requirements include:
- Experience in engineering education
- Experience working on large initiatives as part of a team
- Undergraduate teaching experience
- Exposure to sustainability
