Under the general guidance of the Assistant Director, Diversity Initiatives, the Manager, Veterans Resource Center is responsible for managing the Veterans Resource Center, including navigating complex student veteran issues and developing strategies to address barriers to academic success. Responsibilities include assessing student veteran’s needs and developing and implementing programs promoting student success; evaluating the effectiveness of programs and services; developing and recommending VRC policies and procedures; managing the VRC’s annual operating budget; collaborating with veteran-connected on-and-off campus entities. Position supervises one full-time supervisor and approximately 10 student assistant employees.
Recommend for hire, train, supervise and evaluate one full-time staff employee and approximately ten student assistant employees;
Oversee the daily operation of the Veterans Resource Center including customer service, volunteer and intern programs, facility maintenance, and technological support;
Assess student veteran needs and develop, implement and evaluate programs and services to address student veteran needs;
Develop, monitor, and evaluate annual operating budget; maintains company credit card, approves purchases; reconciles invoice; generates financial reports;
Serve as a primary point of contact for VRC; oversee grant expenditures;
Provide referrals and support for military connected students;
Serve on campus and community-based committees and work groups and/or work teams intended to support and engage the veteran community;
Develop curriculum and facilitate educational trainings and/or train student assistants to facilitate trainings for administrators, faculty, staff and students on topics related to military culture and supporting student veterans;
Consult, collaborate, and engage with campus departments, student organizations and community-based entities to develop solutions to student veteran issues/problems ranging in complexity from moderate to complex;
Provide consultation for students, faculty and staff on a variety of veteran-related topics;
Represent the University, the University Student Union and the Veterans Resource Center at various regional events and at national and local conferences;
Provide direction on marketing outreach efforts for current and prospective CSUN student veterans;
Serve on USU committees and work teams, and attend meetings and events;
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, sociology or a related field. Specialized experience during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Equivalent to two years of professional experience in higher education with an emphasis in veteran affairs, student unions, student activities, or student development, or one year professional experience in a job-related field.
Master’s Degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Higher Education Administration, Social Work or other job related field. Two years professional experience in higher education with emphasis in veteran affairs, student unions, student activities, or student development OR two years professional experience in a job-related field. Experience in budget development, monitoring and analysis.
Knowledge, Abilities and/or Skills:
Knowledge of veteran student needs and veteran resources
Knowledge of the practices, procedures and activities of a Veterans Resource Center
General knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management
General knowledge of the mentoring process
General knowledge of group process training and development practices
General knowledge of student development theory and desired outcomes
General knowledge of managing critical situations including but not limited to mandated reporting
Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook or other email systems
Ability to effectively organize and administer programs and services
Ability to successfully communicate with students, faculty, staff and subordinates including the ability clearly express ideas and directions verbally and in writing including attention to composition, punctuation, grammar, and spelling
Effectively lead individuals and groups
Work independently on multiple tasks without close supervision
Recognize multicultural value systems and work accordingly
Additional Salary Information: The anticipated hiring range: $56,500 - $63,000, dependent upon qualifications and experience.
