The Coordinator of AAPI Student Involvement & Advocacy sits within the Multicultural Involvement & Community Advocacy (MICA) unit in the Adele H. Stamp Student Union – Center for Campus Life at the University of Maryland. This position is responsible for fostering community among Asian American and Pacific Islander students and leaders, serving as an advocate for the needs of AAPI students in and out of the classroom, and promoting the intellectual, personal, social, leadership, and identity development of AAPI students. The Coordinator will advise AAPI student organizations and leaders and support their efforts in community and program development.
The Coordinator for Asian American & Pacific Islander Student Involvement and Advocacy will advise AAPI students and organizations and encourage their involvement in campus life and leadership development opportunities. Duties will include attending organizational meetings and advising program planners, serving as the University liaison with AAPI organizations and their leaders, and assisting in marketing organizations’ programs. The Coordinator should be entrepreneurial in establishing relationships with organizations and academic honoraries where AAPI students are the primary members. In addition, the Coordinator will provide outreach and support to AAPI students with a mission of creating community and working toward the intellectual, personal, social and leadership development of AAPI students. The Coordinator will help to develop individual student AAPI racial and cultural identity through the co-sponsorship of programs with academic and student affairs departments and other student organizations. Serving as a program liaison, the Coordinator will coordinate the efforts of organization advisors and University agencies in delivering services to AAPI students. The Coordinator will implement program offerings that might include the following: welcome and orientation programs, Asian Pacific American Heritage Month events, leadership development programs, organizational retreats, community wide programming, high school outreach programs, and graduation or year-end celebrations. Housed within the Office of Multicultural Involvement and Community Advocacy (MICA), the Coordinator will lead the development of new programmatic, practice and policy initiatives to support office, department, division and institutional goals advancing equity and inclusion. The Coordinator will supervise one graduate assistant and will work in partnership with Stamp Student Union colleagues in delivering quality programs, advising and serving 37,000 students enrolled at the University of Maryland.
Experience in advising Asian Pacific American students and organizations is strongly preferred. Experience and interest in working with students of color, LGBT-identified students, and multiple, intersecting identity student issues is desirable. Demonstrated ability to work in a highly collaborative environment.
