As a member of the OISA team, The International Student Advisor helps support international and global nomad students with their successful transition to and engagement at Grinnell College on campus and in the local community. The Advisor is responsible to support and initiate programs and outreach that enhance this international-student-friendly learning environment. They advise the International Student Organization, Cultural Speakers Bureau, MOSAIC, and Fischowitz Travel Grant. They are also responsible to offer individual and group advising and referral – with the goal to help students engage and thrive in and out of the classroom.
Grinnell enrolls 300+ international and global nomad students, who comprise nearly 20% of our student body.
Master’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Required qualifications include: - a genuine interest in listening to student’s voices and making a positive impact on their educational experience - excellent interpersonal skills and intuitive customer service adaptation - empathy for others and an openness to learn, grow and adapt to change - excellent oral/written communication skills, computer fluency, and attention to detail - ability to handle confidential / sensitive information with discretion - skill at taking initiative, and building partnerships within the office, across campus, and in the local community - an awareness of and sensitivity to diverse cultural communications styles and sojourner adjustment theories - logic to understand, and an interest in receiving, training specific to F-1 regulations, compliance with the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS); and the wide variety of other regulatory issues that impact the international student experience (including but not limited to SSA; IRS; DMV; etc.) - a valid driver’s license
Preferred additional qualifications include:
- an understanding of the interactive and collaborative nature of successful work in a small, private, residential, undergraduate, liberal arts institution
- second language ability and/or experience with populations whose first language is not English
- experience living or working abroad, or working with international populations
