Virginia Commonwealth University is seeking two Assistant Director, Career and Industry Advising, positions in the Office of VCU Career Services. VCU Career Services plays a vital role in fulfilling the University's mission and supporting student success.
One position will serve as liaison to the School of Education. One position will serve as liaison to the School of Government & Public Affairs.
Duties and responsibilities for the Assistant Director, Career & Industry Advising include but are not limited to:
Advise undergraduate, graduate/professional students and selected groups of alumni in individual appointments, drop-in advising and small groups about exploring career and education options.
Assist students in identifying, careers and industries of interests; necessary skills and knowledge to achieve their career goals.
Educate students on how to research employers, network, and engage in the internship/job search process using current technology.
Provide up-to-date information related to industry/market trends, through collaboration with employer & experiential development team and communications specialist, to engage students with employers and alumni.
Administer and interpret assessment instruments to assist students and alumni with self-appraisal.
Conduct periodic evaluations of career development tools and resources as necessary.
Utilize virtual technologies in the delivery of service to students as appropriate (e.g., websites, online surveys, blogs, podcasts, etc.).
Stay current on changing economic and labor conditions and industry trends/best practices.
Program Development & Teaching
Present workshops and programs on career topics to educate and prepare students for the world of work.
Develop content on career-related topics to include self-exploration, résumé writing, interviewing, internship/job search strategies, networking tactics, and graduate/professional school preparation.
Research, develop and deliver industry-specific programming.
Teach career exploration course to undergraduate students.
Work with key stakeholders to create career/industry-specific events and workshops that facilitate student learning and skill development.
Prepare and deliver presentations for various campus stakeholders (faculty, staff, prospective students, alumni, prospects, etc.).
Build and strengthen relationships with faculty, staff, and students.
Serve as liaison to designated academic departments; assess and meet the career development needs of students within academic department; and focus on population-specific programming.
Partner with university departments (ie: Community Engagement, Multicultural Student Affairs, Residential Life, Transfer Student Center, Disability Student Services, etc.) and promote collaboration.
Serve on assigned career/industry network; as well as learn industry content information relevant to student preparation.
Engage industry professionals to participate in programs/events.
Serve on University and/or Division of Student Affairs committees as assigned.
Participate in campus-wide events.
Project Management/Administrative Duties
Provide leadership for, coordination of, programs and projects in line with department, division and university goals.
Play an active role in the collection of assessment data.
Serve on cross-functional teams to elevate vision/mission of VCU Career Services.
Represent VCU and VCU Career Services in local and national professional associations in order to stay current with industry standards and best practices.
Master's degree in student affairs, counseling, higher education, or a related discipline.
Minimum two years of experience working in career services, higher education or a related area (can include graduate school graduate assistantship).
Experience advising students on career-related topics.
Exceptional communication (written, oral, presentation). Demonstrated proficiency designing and delivering presentations.
Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment and commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
Ability to embrace change, effectively manage multiple priorities, programs, and projects.
Demonstrated experience participating in teams and developing positive relationships with campus partners.
Ability to collaborate cross-functionally with employers, students, alumni, faculty, and university administrators.
