Program Advisor - Illini Union Board (Two Positions)

The Illini Union at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is seeking two talented student affairs professionals to serve as a Program Advisor in the Student Programs and Activities Office. As the community center of the University, the Illini Union draws together all members of the University with approximately 16,000 visits of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and guests on a daily basis.
As an advisor to the Illini Union Board, the Program Advisor will work with a diverse group of student leaders and volunteers in coordinating more than 150 cultural, educational, and social programs to the campus community - ranging from concerts, musicals, cultural events, late night programs and lectures - each year and manage a $600,000 budget. The Board is known for its emphasis on programs that meet the needs of a diverse campus, while providing outstanding opportunities for students to develop leadership and programming skills.
The position requires evening and weekend hours.
Position Functions and Major Responsibilities:
The Program Advisor is an administrative position that reports to the Assistant Director of Student Programs and Activities. As part of the professional staff, the Program Advisor should be able to manage multiple tasks while fulfilling the Illini Union goal of building community among students, staff, faculty and alumni of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The position will share primary responsibilities for the daily advisement and management of the Illini Union Board (IUB) while participating in university wide community-building programming efforts.
Serves as the staff advisor to appropriate programming committees and Illini Union Board members in conjunction with the Illini Union Board. Provides proper education and training. Provides proper support, guidance and challenge.
Assists with the budget development and financial expenditures. Processes payment requests in accordance to University policies and processes, including use of University payment systems.
Participates in contract negotiations for entertainment and responsible for routing of contracts in University system. Keeps accurate records and documents.
Coordinates publicity and marketing efforts with the Illini Union Marketing Department.
Attends meetings and specific events associated with the Illini Union, Illini Union Board, Illini Union Student Programs & Activities Office, and the Division of Student Affairs.
Serves as a resource person to various groups, including Illini Union Board members and volunteers, Registered Student Organizations, Illini Union Staff, and U of I Departments.
Offers appropriate support and referrals to students regarding personal issues.
Serves as a liaison to all Board member regarding programmatic, administrative, and policy issues. Provides necessary support, guidance, education, and challenge at meetings.
Performs detailed execution of work as related to all job responsibilities - including communication regarding work status to supervisor and those related to the Illini Union Board administration/advisement.
Performs other duties and additional responsibilities as assigned to further the mission of the unit.
A Master's degree is required plus two years experience in student activities and programming as a student or professional. Must have an understanding of the process of advising and supervising students; an awareness of current needs, trends and issues in the area of Higher Education, Student Affairs and Student Activities; and a familiarity with human psychology, student development and group dynamics principles. An understanding of and commitment towards issues regarding cultural diversity is essential.
Appointment Status: This is a 12-month, full-time academic professional position.
