UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT URBANA-CHAMPAIGN Illinois International Programs International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) Coordinator for Intercultural Initiatives 12 months, 100percent
Function: To manage and facilitate international student integration and overall cross-cultural engagement on campus through targeted programs, activities, orientation for international students and training for faculty and staff.
Serve as coordinator and occasional trainer for campus workshops designed to maximize intercultural understanding and competencies amongst University faculty and staff.
Work with other ISSS staff members to assess needs and trends and to generate resources and training materials for faculty, staff and administrators to enhance the integration of international students. Utilize innovative technology platforms for the delivery and dissemination of materials.
Work with departments who host large numbers of international students to maximize orientation and resource offerings. Meet with key stakeholders across campus to assess current offerings and needs, as well as best practices. Work collaboratively to provide culturally appropriate programs and resources.
Serve as committee chair and lead coordinator for International Week.
Coordinate opportunities that enhance international-domestic student interactions, through venues that allow for meaningful exchanges and through targeted training programs. Conduct effective outreach to student and campus groups to identify potential areas of duplication, overlap, or opportunity for collaboration. Independently or in conjunction with others on campus design and deliver training that helps foster cross-cultural understanding.
Evaluate the current on-boarding process for new international students. Identify areas for improvement from pre-arrival communication through early arrival, and develop programs, materials, and other appropriate means to address those.
Coordinate the in-country orientation programs for strategic overseas venues.
Guided by senior ISSS staff, assist to coordinate the content-driven orientation programming for incoming international students. Help to design and coordinate on-campus orientation programs for newly-arrived students, working closely with New Student Programs and other campus partners.
Evaluate and implement 'ongoing' orientation programs throughout the first year of study.
Work with ISSS international student advisors to coordinate and implement cross-cultural connections events in the ISSS35 programming series.
Reporting Relationship: This position reports to a Senior Assistant Director of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) who reports to the Director for ISSS who reports to the Executive Director for Administration and Management of Illinois International Programs (IIP) who reports to the Vice Provost for International Affairs and Global Strategies who reports to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost.
Qualifications Minimum Qualifications:
A minimum of one year of experience in international programs in a university environment.
Demonstrated experience with programming on intercultural issues.
Experience living abroad.
Proficiency in a foreign language.
Formal training in intercultural communication.
Formal training in workshop design and delivery.
Salary: Commensurate with experience and qualifications.
