Claremont McKenna College (CMC) seeks a Dean of Students (DOS) to work closely with the Vice President for Student Affairs (VPSA) to provide leadership and vision for its division of student affairs. An essential leader in the daily life and program of the College, the DOS will be an important strategic partner to the VPSA and other senior leaders as they seek to enhance the College's position as a leading academic institution and close-knit community of critically minded and responsible leaders engaged in a vibrant academic and social culture. The new DOS will be an experienced student affairs professional who will take the lead on student affairs strategic planning; inspire, mentor, coach, and lead a team of professionals; and successfully implement innovative programming that speaks to a wide spectrum of campus members. The position requires someone who has a thorough understanding of student affairs best practices in a highly residential setting. The DOS position is focused on supporting students in their overall development during their years at CMC. The role requires a person committed to a transformational approach to student affairs work. In the transformational framework, through intensely complementary academic and co-curricular programs and experiences offered at CMC and in the Claremont Consortium, students are empowered to be resourceful, independent problem-solvers, responsible and engaged community members, and successful leaders beyond graduation.
Reporting to the VPSA, the DOS will supervise the Associate Dean of Students for Academic Success, Assistant Dean for Student Activities & Orientation, and the Assistant Dean for Community Expectations & Student Conduct. Additional student affairs staff members include the Associate Dean for Diversity & Inclusion & Residential Life, the Assistant Dean for Disability Services & Academic Success, the Assistant Dean for Health, Wellness, & Case Management, the Assistant Dean & Director of Residential Life, the Assistant Director of Residence Life & Housing, the Assistant Director of Student Activities, and 21 undergraduate resident assistants.
These multiple positions form a cohesive and comprehensive DOS office which oversees most aspects of a student's life outside of the classroom, including a variety of resources, and co-curricular programs, and one-on-one support and assistance. The DOS and VPSA work closely in a shared leadership model with staff members in the student service resources provided by the Claremont Colleges Consortium.
